Female Driver Killed in Car Crash in Opelousas

While most of New Orleans was enjoying the Saints taking on the Minnesota Vikings this past weekend, the police were responding to a two-car crash in Opelousas. 57-year old Stephanie Soileau was driving her car Northbound on Louisiana Highway 103. She had her seatbelt on and, according to police, wasn’t speeding.

Unfortunately, Soileau wasn’t able to maintain her lane as she entered a curve near the intersection of Route 103 and McGuffy Road in St. Landry Parish. She crossed the center line and headed into oncoming traffic.

After crossing into the Southbound lanes, Soileau crashed into a pickup truck, head-on. Thankfully, there was nobody in the car with the driver at the time of the crash. There was only 1 person in the pickup truck as well.

Both drivers were seriously injured in the crash. Soileau was taken directly to the hospital but died shortly thereafter from her injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, who was also wearing his seatbelt, was also taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The name of the driver of the pickup truck has not been released. Nor have the authorities confirmed the cause of the crash. Toxicology tests have been performed on both drivers to see if either was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. The results are still pending.

The police wanted to remind the people of St. Landry Parish to be smart about the choices they make. Enjoy the game, but stay safe. Regardless of whether or not the tests confirm that Soileau was under the influence, the other driver may still have a legal claim to pursue.
