Bicyclist Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Train in Plaquemine

A bicyclist suffered severe injuries after being struck by a train in Plaquemine on Friday, October 30, 2026. The collision occurred around 5:30 p.m., and emergency personnel transported the injured person to a hospital.

WAFB reported on November 1 that the cyclist suffered severe lower-body injuries and was in serious condition when transported. The person’s name was not publicly released in the reporting reviewed.

Where did the collision occur?

WAFB places the crash at Railroad Avenue and Desobry Street. WBRZ reported on October 30 that Plaquemine Police Chief Stephen Engolio located the incident near Fort Street. Both reports concern a cyclist struck by a train in Plaquemine at approximately 5:30 p.m. The differing location descriptions have not been reconciled.

Officials said nearly all railroad crossings in Plaquemine were temporarily closed after the incident. WBRZ reported the train had cleared the tracks by about 10 p.m.

What needs to be established?

The central question is how the bicycle and train came into contact. The reports do not establish whether the bicyclist was at a designated public crossing, whether warning equipment was present or operating, or what the crew observed before impact. Those facts cannot be inferred merely because a train struck a bicyclist.

The evidence that matters now

Crossing configuration and warning equipment. Investigators should first establish the precise impact location and determine whether it was a designated crossing. If gates, signals or other warnings were present, their condition and operation could become important. The available reports do not confirm that any particular warning device existed at the impact point.

Locomotive and dispatch records. Identifying the train and its operator may allow investigators to seek available forward-facing video, event-recorder information, crew accounts, horn or bell records and communications around the incident. The inquiry should first establish which records exist and which are relevant.

Bicycle and scene evidence. Original police photographs, location measurements, the damaged bicycle and any nearby camera recordings could help establish how the cyclist approached the tracks and where impact occurred. Such evidence may be difficult to reconstruct once the scene changes.

None of these evidence priorities establishes railroad negligence. Any civil claim would require proof of applicable duties, a breach of those duties, causation and damages, evaluated against the actual facts.
