A 72-year-old man from Golden Meadow died following a three-wheeled motorcycle crash on Laurel Valley Road near Choctaw Road in Thibodaux.
The collision occurred shortly before noon Sunday, October 11, 2026.
According to Louisiana State Police, the man was traveling east on a 2023 Harley-Davidson Freewheeler while negotiating an S-curve.
The motorcycle crossed the centerline, left the roadway to the left and overturned.
The rider was wearing a DOT-approved helmet. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he later died. His name has not been released.
Why the Type of Motorcycle Matters
The Freewheeler is a three-wheeled motorcycle, not a conventional two-wheeled Harley-Davidson.
That distinction matters when reconstructing a curve-related rollover. A three-wheeled motorcycle responds differently to steering inputs and lateral forces because it does not lean through turns in the same manner as a conventional motorcycle.
Investigators should determine exactly where the Freewheeler crossed the centerline and whether it began overturning before or after leaving the pavement.
They should also examine the relationship between the two directional changes in the S-curve and the motorcycle’s path.
What Evidence Could Explain the Crash?
The motorcycle’s front steering system, rear tires, suspension and overall mechanical condition should be documented before the vehicle is dismantled.
Measurements of the roadway’s curvature, cross slope, pavement condition and shoulder could help establish whether the motorcycle’s movement was consistent with the reported sequence.
Investigators should also review any available witness accounts and electronic information, without assuming the motorcycle recorded modern crash data.
No other vehicle has been identified as involved. A roadway defect or mechanical problem has not been established.
What the Family Should Know
The fact that the Freewheeler crossed the centerline does not explain why that happened.
An investigation should distinguish between driver inputs, mechanical condition and roadway characteristics before drawing conclusions about responsibility.
If retained, Babcock Injury Lawyers would preserve the Freewheeler and examine the evidence specific to its three-wheel configuration.
